Museos sin colección

Los museos sin colección, aunque muchos los consideran una idea nueva, llevan existiendo mucho tiempo. Los Kunsthalle, como se conocen en las áreas de habla alemana, son facilidades donde se montan exhibiciones temporeras organizadas por los Kunstverein, una asociación de artistas y coleccionistas de la región. La diferencia entre los de aquella época y los museos actuales es el énfasis en la programación educativa de dichas instituciones. Actualmente, los museos sin colección pueden utilizar el dinero que usualmente iría hacia la conservación, restauración y adquisición de piezas para la colección, hacia otras áreas de importancia en la misión del museo, privilegiando a la educativa.
